Johan Hermans dankt zijn reputatie als concertorganist aan succesvolle optredens in kathedralen, abdijen en concertzalen in o.a. Parijs, New York, Moskou, Londen, Hong Kong, Brussel, Adelaide, Amsterdam,  Milaan, Osaka, Rio de Janeiro, Singapore, Sydney, Tromsø (Arctic Cathedral)  en Washington D.C.

Hij gaf ook voordrachten en masterclasses aan o.a. de University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, de University of Houston, Texas, de Kunstenuniversiteit in Osaka, de Nationale MuziekAcademie in Riga (Letland) en de Gnessin Academie in Moskou.

Johan maakte opnames voor radio- en Tv-zenders in 4 continenten en nam Cd’s op voor de labels Motette-Ursina, Sony Belgium, Vision-Air en Pavane Records.

Hij onderhoudt een repertoire met werken van de 14de tot de 21e eeuw en bracht wereldpremières van hedendaagse werken.

Recente hoogtepunten in zijn concertpraktijk zijn de recitals in de Notre Dame kathedraal en de Sainte-Trinitékerk van Parijs, diverse kathedralen in Engeland en Schotland, tal van philharmonische concertzalen in Rusland waaronder die van St. Petersburg en Yekaterinburg, het Cultuurcentrum van Hong Kong, zijn recital in West Point (New York), en 2 concertreizen naar Brazilië.

In 2013 reisde hij voor de tweede keer naar Australië, om er op te treden in het festival “Organs of the Ballarat Goldfields” nabij Melbourne.

Johan sloot zijn hogere muziekstudies aan het Lemmensinstituut te Leuven en het Koninklijk Conservatorium te Luik af met het gegeerde “Diplôme Supérieur” (“Prix d’Excellence”) voor Orgel. Daarnaast behaalde hij meerdere Eerste Prijzen en certificaten. Zowel de Vlaamse als de Franse Gemeenschap kenden hem studiebeurzen toe voor buitenlandse vervolmaking.

In zijn geboortestad Hasselt is hij leraar aan het stedelijk conservatorium, kathedraalorganist en stadsorganist. Daarnaast is hij al sinds het begin van zijn carrière leraar aan de stedelijke academie van Genk.

Tevens is hij voorzitter van de Limburgse afdeling van de Koninklijke Vereniging van Organisten en Kerkmusici en vice-voorzitter van de European Chapter van de American Guild of Organists. De  Société Académique “Arts – Sciences – Lettres” te Parijs verleende hem een onderscheiding voor zijn verdiensten in de orgelwereld.

Johan Hermans is at the front of his generation of organists in Europe. He owes his reputation to successful recital performances in cities such as Seattle, Paris, New York, Moscow, London, Hong Kong, Brussels, Adelaide, Milano, Osaka, Rio de Janeiro, Singapore, St. Petersburg, Sydney and Washington D.C.

He also has given presentations at, among other venues, the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor; the University of Houston, Texas; the University of Arts in Osaka, Japan; the National Music Academy in Riga, Latvia; the Cultural Center in Hong Kong, China and the Gnessin Academy in Moscow, Russia.

Johan has recordings to his credit for Austrian, Belgian, Canadian, Dutch, German, Latvian, Polish and Spanish Radio- and TV Broadcasting Corporations and has made recordings for Motette-Ursina, Sony Belgium, Vision-Air and Pavane Records –  receiving notable recognition for his work.  

He masters a vast repertoire containing works from the 14th to the 21st century and premiered new organ compositions, some of them having been dedicated to him.

The recording of the newly restored historic organ of Hasselt Cathedral which he made for the national classic Radio Broadcast “Klara” got published in the CD series “Flemish Organ Treasures” (label Vision-Air).

Highlights of the recent past were his recitals as an organ soloist at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris; the Kaiser Dom in Frankfurt; St. Giles’ Cathedral in Edinburgh, Scotland (Celebrity Recital series); the Cathedrals of Canterbury and Lincoln (Celebrity Recitals) in England; the world famous organ of Cadet Chapel at Military Academy, West Point, New York ; the International Organ Festival of Palma de Mallorca, Spain ; the Philharmonic Hall of St. Petersburg, Russia (“Best Organists of the World” series); his two concert tours through South America and his recital in Singapore.

Johan studied at the Lemmens Institute in Louvain and at the Royal Conservatory of Liège, Belgium.  He completed his education with a thesis on “Rethoric and Affects in the music of J.S. Bach” and the “Diplôme Supérieur” (the equivalent of a “Doctor of Musical Arts” or “Prix d’Excellence”) in Organ Performance.  He was granted scholarships from both the Flemish and the French community of his country to attend international master classes by famous organists in France, Germany, Spain, the Netherlands and Italy.

Johan Hermans teaches Organ Performance and Keyboard Harmony at the Municipal Academy of Genk and the Conservatory of Hasselt, Belgium. He also holds the posts of Cathedral Organist of St. Quintinus Cathedral and Civic Organist in Hasselt. He is the founder and artistic director of the International Organ Festival of Hasselt.

He is a board member of the American Guild of Organists’ European Chapter and dean of the Limburg chapter of the Dutch organist’s association KVOK in the Netherlands.

In April 2005 he was honored by the Academic Society of “Arts – Sciences – Lettres” of Paris.

Johan Hermans est l’organiste titulaire de la cathédrale de Hasselt en Belgique, où il est également l’organiste municipal.

Il a suivi des études supérieures de musique à l’institut Lemmens de Louvain, au Conservatoire Royal de Musique de Liège et à l’Accademia di Musica Italiana per Organo à Pistoia (Toscane). Il termine ses études à Liège avec le Diplôme Supérieur d’orgue. Son interprétation du Concerto de Poulenc lui valut la Plus Grande Distinction avec les félicitations du jury.

Il obtient ensuite plusieurs bourses qui lui permettront de participer à des cours de maîtrise donnés par des organistes renommés, tant en Belgique qu’à l’étranger. Il a ainsi eu l’occasion de perfectionner son art en Allemagne, en France, en Espagne, et aux Pays-Bas.

Sa carrière l’a amené ces dernières années à devenir un soliste très demandé, y compris à l’étranger. Il est ainsi régulièrement invité à participer à des séries prestigieuses de concerts en des villes telles que Paris, Singapore, New York, Moscou, Londres, Hong Kong, Bruxelles, Adelaïde, Milan, Rio de Janeiro, Osaka, St. Petersburg, Sydney et Washington.

Il a donné des conférences et des masterclass dans diverses universités en Amérique, en Russie, au Japon, en Amérique du Sud et à Hong Kong.

Johan Hermans est professeur d’orgue au conservatoire de Hasselt. En tant qu’organiste municipal, il y organise les concerts municipaux d’orgue dans la cathédrale. Il est président fondateur de l’association “Orgelkring Limburg” (Cercle d’orgue du Limbourg) et directeur artistique du Festival International d’Orgue. Il contribue ainsi au développement de la culture d’orgue dans sa région.

Johan Hermans a enregistré pour la radio en Belgique, aux Pays-Bas, en Allemagne, au Canada, en Pologne, en Australie, en Espagne, aux Etats-Unis et en Lettonie et a réalisé plusieurs CD (notamment pour PAVANE, SONY Belgium, NAXOS, et MOTETTE-URSINA).

Il maîtrise un répertoire varié d’œuvres du 14e au 21e siècles et a créé, en première mondiale, des œuvres pour orgue dont certaines lui sont dédiées. Il s’engage tout particulièrement dans le domaine de la musique de chambre pour orgue, afin de propager et d’enrichir ce répertoire particulier.

Il a été distingué par l’association académique Arts-Sciences-Lettres de Paris.

Der Organist Johan Hermans steht an der Spitze seiner Generation in Europa. Er dankt seinen Ruf den erfolgreichen Konzerten in Kathedralen, Klöstern und Konzertsälen in Städten wie Paris, New York, Moskau, London, Hongkong, Brüssel, Mailand, Rio de Janeiro, Osaka, Petersburg und Washington.

Er hat außerdem viele Vorträge gehalten: u.a. an der Universität von Michigan in Ann Arbor, USA, der Universität der Künste in Osaka, Japan, der Nationalen Musik Akademie in Riga, Lettland, und der russischen Gnessin Musikakademie in Moskau.

Johan hat angesehene Aufnahmen für österreichische, belgische, kanadische, niederländische, deutsche, lettische, polnische und spanische Radio- und Fernsehsender gemacht. Weiter Aufnahmen erfolgten für Motette Ursina, Sony Belgien, Vision Air und Pavane Records, wodurch ihm bemerkenswerte Annerkennung zuteil wurde. Er meistert ein überwältigendes Repertoire, das Werke vom 14. bis 21. Jahrhundert umfasst.

Darüber hinaus führte er neue Orgelkompositionen erstmals auf, von denen einige ihm gewidmet wurden. An der kürzlich restaurierten historischen Orgel der Hasselt Kathedrale (Belgien) machte er Aufnahmen für die nationale klassische Radioübertragung „Klara“. Diese wurde im November 2005 in der CD-Serie „Flämische Orgel Schätze“ veröffentlicht.

Höhepunkte der jüngeren Vergangenheit waren seine Aufführungen als Orgel-Solist an unterschiedlichsten Orten: Kathedrale Notre Dame in Paris; Kaiser Dom in Frankfurt; St. Giles` Kathedrale in Edinghburg, Schottland ; Kathedrale von Canterbury und Lincoln in England; „Internationales Orgelfestival Arte Organica“ in Valladolid, Spanien; Philharmonie von St. Petersburg, Russland („Beste Organisten der Welt-Serie“); Kulturzentrum von Hongkong; zwei Konzertreisen durch Südamerika.

Johan studierte am Lemmens Institut in Leuven und am Königlichen Konservatorium von Lüttich, Belgien. Er vervollständigte seine Ausbildung mit einer Diplomarbeit über „Rhetorik und Affekte in der Musik von J. S. Bach“ und dem „Diplôme Supérieur“ (das Equivalent zu einem „Doctor of Musical Arts“ oder „Prix d´Excellence“) in der Kunst des Orgelspiels. Er erhielt Stipendien sowohl von der flämischen als auch von der französischen Vereinigung seines Landes, um internationale Meisterklassen berühmter Organisten in Frankreich, Deutschland, Spanien , den Niederlanden und Italien zu besuchen. Johan Hermans lehrt das künstlerische und liturgische Orgelspiel, Kammermusik und Tonsatz am Konservatorium von Hasselt, Belgien.

Er ist Organist an der Kathedrale St. Quintinus und städtischer Organist von Hasselt. Darüber hinaus ist er der Gründer und Direktor des Internationalen Orgelfestivals von Hasselt und künstlerischer Leiter mehrerer Orgelkonzertreihen in seiner Region.

Er ist Mitglied des Leitungsgremiums des Orgel-Komitees der Diözese von Hasselt und dem Limburg Domkapitel der Königlich Niederländischen Orgelgesellschaft.Im April 2005 wurde er von der Akademischen Gesellschaft für “Arts – Sciences – Lettres”
